MacLeod-MacDonald Clans join in annual gathering

Graniteville, Vt – Clan MacLeod and Clan MacDonald got together for their annual gathering on Sunday July 19, 1970, at the Alice Macleod farm in Graniteville, Vermont. The spacious home of Leslie and Cassie MacLeod was put at the disposal of the visitors, and picnic tables were set up on the lawn.  On arriving in Graniteville on a sunny Sunday morning, everyone proceeded to First Presbyterian Church to attend Divine Service on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of that church.  Before and after the church service, many old acquaintances were renewed and new ones made as it was the first trip back to Graniteville, for some of the participants in over 50 years.

At the MacLeod farm, about 100 signed the register, several coming from the Milan, Scotstown and Lennoxville area, many from the states of Vermont and New Hampshire, and others from as far as Delray Beach, Fla, Detroit, Mich, Maryland and Massachusetts.  A telephone call from Donald Murray in Columbus, Ohio and a letter from John W French in Cookshire were received in which they expressed regret in not being able to attend.

The eldest guest to sign the register was Miss Katie Morrison of Montpelier, Vt while the youngest was Michelle Morrison of New York City, a granddaughter of Roderick Morrison, formerly of Dell.  A 1970 Canadian silver dollar was presented to these two visitors, as well as to Mrs Rita Nutbrown, who came all the way from Florida, registering as the one travelling the farthest to attend.  Recipients also included Queenie Longmore and Leslie MacLeod, who helped organise the gathering.  The presentations were made by Duncan MacLeod.

It was decided to hold the 12th annual gathering in 1971 on the third Sunday in July at the WG MacLeod farm in Canterbury.  The committee will meet this fall to plan for it.  Before leaving for their respective homes, everyone expressed their thanks and appreciation to Mr and Mrs Leslie MacLeod and Mrs Alice MacLeod for helping to make this Clan gathering such a memorable one.
