Following the Rebellion Losses Bill in 1849, and the subsequent burning of the parliament buildings in Montreal, the St Andrew’s Society of Montreal held a meeting, which punished their beloved patron, Lord Elgin, Governor General of Canada, by kicking him out of the Society.

Below is a scanned image from Library and Archives Canada of the actual letter he received as a result of the meeting.  The Elgin family kept all of his correspondance, and the pieces are now available for viewing on the Library and Archives of Canada website.  I will say that finding the stuff is not easy with their search engine, but the effort is worth it.
