The Late David Leitch

The death of Mr. David Leitch, an old and highly esteemed resident of the district, occurred at his home on the South Branch on Nov 11th.  The deceased was the second and only remaining son of the Late William Leitch.  He was born on January 5th 1855, on the old homestead adjoining the farm on which he spent the greater part of his life.  He was married to Annie McLennan, daughter of the late Ewan McLennan.  He is survived by his wife and three sons and four daughters- Messrs William and Roderick Leitch, at home, Prof Arch. Leitch of the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, Mrs. Paul F Schubert, of Adams NY, Mrs. WL Pender of Renfrew, Mrs. Russell Cameron of Summerstown, and Miss Nicholas Leitch, at home.  All were present at the funeral, except Mrs. Schubert.  He was predeceased by his brothers William of Montreal, and Hugh of Cornwall.  Another brother, the Hon Mr. Justice Leitch of Toronto died a few years ago, also his sister Agnes, in her girlhood and Mrs. Aeneas Macdonald of Chicago.  One sister Miss Christena Leitch is the surviving member of the family.

The late Mr. Leitch was a man of kind and genial disposition, devoted to his work of farming, and by the patience and perseverance of himself and member of his family built up one of the finest farm properties in the district.  For many years he had a successful breeder of live stock, often acting as judge of live stock at neighbouring fairs.  He was a member of his local school board, and also held office in the Cornwall Agricultural Society.  In his work he made many friends and they regret his sudden yet none the less expected passing, as he had been in failing health for the past two years.

The funeral took place on Friday afternoon last from his late residence to Woodlawn cemetery, Cornwall, and was largely attended, many calling to express their sympathy and sorrow in the death of a kind neighbor and friend.  The service was conducted by the Rev. James Faulds, MA, pastor of Salem Church, Summerstown.  The pall bearers were Messrs Donald McLennan, Kenneth McLennan, Alex Ferguson, Russell Cameron, James Brown and James A Hunter.  The Rev. Mr. Faulds paid a high tribute to the deceased, referring to his fine character and worth as a member of the community.

Among the beautiful floral tributes placed on the casket were a pillow from the family; wreath Mrs. William Leitch and sons, Montreal; sheafs Mr. and Mrs. Russell Cameron, Miss C Leitch, Miss TE Leitch, Ottawa; Dr and Mrs. AJ Mack, Cornwall; Mrs. and Mrs. WJ Macfarlane, Cornwall; Miss Edith Ferguson, and the South Branch Auxillary of the WMS [Women’s Missionary Society].

The deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.
