Thank you! I was in the Dumfries museum and consulted the Walter Newall Archives, what a treasure trove of information. I am utterly fascinated by this branch of my family. Marvelous that you donated it there. It is a great part of Dumfries history!

Hello Gillian
I have been interested to follow a couple of articles on your blog about Walter Newall-Copeland. We had purchased (his uncle) Walter Newall's oil portrait and a folio of his architectural drawings (via antique dealers) from the family estate in North Saanich around 1990. We have just completed their return to the Dumfries Museum (which he designed c1840) so they have 'gone home' where we feel they belong. Thanks for the extra family history which I have forwarded (with credit) to the Dumfries Museum - along with research I have supplied - for their artifact information.

This is a good point--we know a lot about what armies/divisions/battalions did but rarely the routine acts of individual soldiers. Official records record individuals in extraordinary cases, but unless a soldier kept a record, wrote a memoir, etc. there's not much to go on. This leads to the sort or blind spot you had with your uncle's service. Great post!
